Along the lines of the forum post on number of comments on a given idea (http://www.quirky.com/forums/topic/600), here's an idea:
If there was a little button we could click, separate from the voting button, just to indicate that we think it's a neat idea/has potential, then this would be a good sorting feature -- sort by most "has potential" ratings. You could have an unlimited amount of 'has potential' opinions (i.e., you could mark this on every single idea if you wanted) but you could only VOTE for 3 of them. That way, number of comments don't mean really mean anything, but you get somewhat of a better measure of interest in a given idea.

The Reddit (http://www.reddit.com/) system is the best way to sort ideas. Just a simple upvote and downvote button next to an idea will sort it out. And just like Reddit, you could also upvote and downvote comments so that those comments that members feel are most relevant/helpful/important can bubble up to the top of the list.

...on the other hand, does quirky want voters to be influenced by what other people are thinking?
IMO, my vote does a better job of indicating my opinion about an idea if my vote decision is not diluted by other considerations, like what others think about the idea.
Since it's my opinion about an idea that is valuable to quirky, I don't think a function that will dilute the importance of my opinion to my vote decision, like a public "like" button would, benefits quirky.
So, no public "like" buttons or "most comment" sort options, etc....remove the things people use to dilute the importance of their simple opinion about the idea to their vote decision.
Now, a private "like" button would be fantastic. If I could click "like" next to an idea, then later go back and sort by "my likes", voting on ideas would be a lot easier. Just keep the "like" button private (like votes are)..so nobody else's opinion about the idea is influenced by what I like.

Great thinking, Priya! Are you envisioning something similar to what's on Facebook? -
-
Actually, yeah, a "Like" button with a tally would do the trick -- even connect that similarity. We'd have to call it something far quirkier than "Like".
"Quirktastic" or "Quirkilicious" maybe? Ok...maybe not. Maybe just "This would be fun to Quirkify" or something... -

I’m
enjoying the brainstorming too, but beware of lightning!
Ooh, both names sound fun to me! Thanks for helping us brainstorm. -

I agree with the private "LIKE" button. If it's public then people will be swayed by what other people like instead of voting for the ideas they really like.

Clinton, the idea of the "like" button (or "this would be fun to Quirk-ify" or "I can see this idea on the shelves" button) is to reduce the noise that occurs with the number of comments, which people may or may not use to sort when evaluating ideas, and this number may or may not influence voters, per the discussion in the forum (see my original post above for the link).
Because the community cannot see the number of votes an idea has, but they can see the number of comments, some people do use this to see what ideas are getting "buzz" (and can usually figure out quickly if the submitter is the one making most of the comments vs. many unique commenters).
Because you wouldn't have a limit on these like-type ratings as you do on votes, you could sort by all the ones YOU thought were cool/useful/marketable, and/or ones that MANY people thought were cool/useful/marketable, and it would still be up to you as to whether or not you choose to let this influence your vote.
IMO, I think it would provide some useful insight into market potential based on these types of ratings. -
-
I see your point, Priya.
My understanding is that, generally when voting, we are to select the ideas we think are the "best", however we define that.
And I think you're saying that, for those who include "market potential" in their definition of "best", the number of "likes" from a "like" button would give a better idea of how the community is feeling about the idea than the number of comments.
I agree that it's better than the number of comments.
I guess it comes down to what things the staff hopes we consider as we define "best".
It seems to me that "best" defined as "I will buy this" makes them smile, while "best" defined as "this will win me influence" makes them frown.
If they also like us to include "good market potential" in our definition of "best", then a public "like" button seems to make sense. If not, then maybe a private "like" button is better.-
As I've said before elsewhere, it's also important to know how many people really dislike a name. Imagine if 5 people vote for a name and the staff likes it; it might make a real difference if 100 other people took the time to give the same name a thumbs-down.

I like the "Thumbs-Up" or "Thumbs-Down" for each product name, tagline, color scheme, etc., but only allow Quirky staff to see the tally numbers for the number of thumbs-up and thumbs-down.

I've added the ability to vote against a name or tagline to the plate for our tech team to consider. Try to brainstorm an alternative way of doing this. We want to keep things constructive while empowering everyone to bubble up the best ideas for our consideration!

Really like this, it could just place the most relevant/potential ideas at the top, while avoiding the less probable ones, and hopefully this could make out time more efficient ('cause right now 700 ideas, is crazy, who has time to read them all?).

Agree.

How about a private ability to X (delete) the entries you don't like? So you only see let us say 10 to 20 entries out of 250.

Five Immediate Improvements Suggested from a New Member:
My apologies if suggested before, but it's just too much to ask to wade through so much when not on your payroll. Concept is great, but processes and systems need more quick hit efficiency improvements.
1) Add further categories such as Personal Care Products, Sporting Goods, etc.
2) Provide summary and page counts like jobs boards do for all categories and pages.
3) FILTER/WEED OUT the readily weak ideas either by a random selection and solicitation of community members that changes where each are assigned a certain number of ideas to wade through like 25-50 each. Can even create a 2-3 tier re-check process to ensure the idea volume numbers get scaled down quickly per week so energy by the community is better spent reviewing and contributing. Give rotating volunteers influence points or accumulating reward points for a special team consideration of involving their own potential idea.
For example, I just saw an idea listed for a product concept that mirrors that which already exists in the marketplace. That sort of thing should be filtered out immediately.
4) By filtering out the lessor ideas following some standard perception criteria, it will enable the community to vote actively. Speaking of, add vote summary counts to ideas so the community understands where ideas are ranking. If some X% or number of community members has voted(threashold reached), further purge lowest ideas more quickly. While each member should only be able to vote once, updated crowd stance involving top rated ideas becomes transparent. Provide next round ability for community to rank remaining top 20 overall or Top 10 per category type of thing. Really? We must assess standing now by # of comments? Good lord. Another alterative to a "like" "don't like" feature as an initial evaluation pass, perhaps a "Quirky Make the Grade A-F or "Quirk Numbered 1-5(1 being best))"
Let the "Pass/ Fail" approach be dealt with stemming from the initial filtering out I suggest in my #3 above.
5) If the remaining, more viable ideas are focussed upon by a largest share of the community that votes upon and perhaps is given a rank the top 20 tool, they are bound to be more involved and NOT LOST in the muck of the volume of also rans, thereby streamlining the presentment of the best of the best ideas where perhaps more active participation will warrant product purchasing threasholds. -

I think it would be great if Quirky had a percentage and ranking system that the inventor could see in the profile in REAL TIME. This would be used for the inventor to see where their idea is ranked, percentage wise, based on views and votes. As time passes, the inventor would be able to see if the idea moves up or down in percentage. The percentage would be determined by views versus votes. Since we all log in with a username and password , if the same person viewed the item more than once, then it only count as one view so as not to skew the numbers. Example: Out of the 100 people that viewed your idea, 25% of them voted for you. This would be private from everyone else. In addition, a single idea could also be ranked OVERALL versus all other ideas that were submitted on the same day. This could have REAL TIME hourly, daily and weekly intervals until the 30 day period ends. It would also have the final 30 day metrics as well. It would help Quirky determine what would be a good idea to market on a weekly basis and also help the inventor determine whether he should resubmit the idea at the end of the 30 days. The reason behind the percentage and ranking system is that some items are not going to get as much exposure than others because of various factors. Example: time of day the idea was posted, how many users were online at the time, category... etc. This would create an even "playing field" for all ideas based on those metrics. Let me know your thoughts?

RANKING IS ONE THING BUT CATEGORIZATION IS A PREREQUISITE. I SUGGEST SEPARATING APPLES FROM ORANGES.-- WISHES ONLY, SMALL IMPROVEMENTS, MAJOR IMPROVEMENTS, LOW IMPACT NEW INVENTIONS, FINALLY HIGH IMPACT NEW INVENTIONS. ALSO ALL SUGGESTIONS/IDEAS TO BE CATEGORIZED TOPIC WISE ADDITIONALLY.

I really like the idea of sorting through peoples comments on an idea, That way all the "cool idea" and "voted!" comments will go to the end and the comments that actually have substance and contribute to the idea will be on top, this should help stimulate more conversations branching from those.

BESIDES COMMUNITY COMMENTING ON ALL IDEAS, IT IS IMPORTANT THAT QUIRKY AMBASSADORS GO THROUGH THE IDEAS SUBMITTED AND SEE FOR THEMSELVES WHAT IS A WISH, WHAT IS A DOLLAR STORE PRODUCT, AND WHAT IS REALLY A HIGH VALUE IDEA WHICH IF ACTED UPON COULD BE EQUIVALENT TO 100 FLIMSY IDEAS PUT TOGETHER. -- THE TWO GLARING EXAMPLES ARE THE IRS TAX IDEA, AND LED LIGHTS ON UMBRELLAS. I AGREE YOU ARE MAKING $ 10 /IDEA POSTED ON YOUR SITE BUT YOU DONT KNOW HOW MUCH YOU ARE LOOSING BY NOT PURSUING THE HIGH IMPACT CORPORATE IDEAS.

I suggest a square based design 3 columns displaying picture only, and showing the description/name on mouse-over, or up-scaling image + name/description on mouse-over. It's the most classy and organized way to see the ideas.
Additionally, changing the categories so that better ideas are visible. Newest takes you out of page 1 in 2 hours, most active takes you down when you lose hype. A filter for most voted or %voted per view would be really awesome. The percentage one specially will take you to the most liked ideas. -
-
Also, a "Quirky vote" given from forum admins/experienced users/ staff would be really cool.
