Categorize submissions

It would be great if the ideas submitted were categorized so it is easier to go through them. With 300+ submissions this week, it is difficult to scroll through each one. At least if they were in a category, after I rated one category, I would feel like I accomplished something.

indifferent I’m determined to change things!
I was inspired by luci in another thread.
What if instead of just 2 buttons on the influence page, one for open round, one for brief, there were 4 buttons.Such as for....
    1. Virgins: First time Quirky Submitters.
    2. Addicts: They have submitted before.
    3. Resubmits: Product ideas that have been submitted before, possible tweaked.
    4. Retailer or Product Brief: a call out for a specific type of product or genre of product.
Does anyone have any other ideas. I have also heard mentioned to break down the products submitted into categories, like kitchen, organization, pets etc.
At the very least it would help organize the submissions and maybe you wouldnt feel so overwhelmed. You could say to yourself "I'm only going to look at the virgins today." and then when you can just get thru those you feel special.

Separate everything into say like five categories: Every member can only choose two out of the five categories to work on, less work for every member and still earns full influence for doing the rating and everyone wins and the work gets done....

    Halfway implemented.
If voters are not guaranteed that a winner will be chosen out of each category, this will have no effect:
All voters will still feel the need to "look" at "all" submissions.

I'm curious to know what Quirky thinks this accomplished.

Hi Quirky people, love the site, but with the new show I am sure the number of submitted ideas is about to go crazy (looks like the "any idea" catagory already went up by around 400 ideas from last week to this week). Any plans to let people just vote in areas they care about and have the most knowledge about, such as kids, pets, electronics etc.? At first I thought this would be a site I could get addicted to, but tossing ideas out that may have little chance of being seen by anyone out of a pool of 700 or even thousands wouldn't not be much fun at all and could then get boring. Not to mention you have things out there like "sunglasses that shoot fire" that are going to turn off more serious people. Anyway, before shouting from the rooftops what a fabulous idea this site is, wanted to ask if there are plans to deal with the growing numbers...otherwise it will just become "for $10 you can throw your idea out there, and if it's more ilkely to be stolen rather than seriously reviewed or voted on" which would bite. Thanks!

So, if the winner can come from any category, why would people take the option of looking only at certain ones?

No ones going to do that.

Doesn't that make this new categories idea meaningless?

Doesn't that mean Quirky just wasted a bunch of effort and time?

Hi, I can see why people find this subject frustrating or that it might not help...but the fact is that even if someone feels like they "need" to look at all submissions most people simply can't. In theory, I wish I could look at a thousand submissions or more per week, but I can't. So if I have time to look at maybe 100 or 150, I would prefer they are in catagories I care about or know about. But yes, it would be nice to get influence credit even it becomes impossible to look at the desired 70 or 80 percent.

Additionally, if I submit an idea, I prefer it gets looked at by people in that market. For example, I just submited my first idea on a garden planner, but for people who don't garden they may find it boring or not really understand that it would be a thousand times better than massive use of post-its. You might get a better response standing outside a plant nursery and asking those people what they think.

I don't know enough about the Quirky community yet to comment on its demorgraphic, but if Quirky wants to make products in a variety of catogories, they will need to find a way to identify a buzz in different topic areas...maybe most current Quirky visitors are tech types and don't care as much about baby products, but that doesn't mean a baby product wouldn't be a great success.

So! The solution may be to take a closer look at the top picks from EACH CATAGORY each week. Doesn't mean they need to pick a winner from each catagory...but at least let people focus on what they care about and know about, and give the items with the most votes in each catagory a chance. Maybe I don't want to read 500 entries about ipad accessories, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't recognize a really cool idea or appreciate it once those who DO use ipads knock it to the top. So...glad to hear there are catgories now, I am new and will need to look closer to figure out how to use this feature!

Thrilled to see this implemented! I find it useful so that I can go through one category at a time and feel like I accomplished something. It also helps to figure out where I left off. I plan on looking at all the categories. This just makes it easier.

    Thanks Quirky!

The Quirky "idea dream" is quickly becoming similar to the Hollywood idea pitch or screenplay dream.

They hire and pay qualified readers to sift through the mountain of scripts and story ideas they receive. Each screenplay gets a pass, consider or recommend.

In screenplay competitions each script can get read by up to 3 different readers. The highest scores move to qualifying rounds. As the competition progresses the more qualified readers critique the work. Final rounds are usually judged by Hollywood executives.

Quirky should use the money raised from submissions to hire" idea readers" who will be trained in recognizing viable Quirky ideas.

Then post say the top 50 rated and let the community take it from there.

True -as much as I love the idea of having ideas thrown out from anyone anywhere in the country, I can already tell there are a whole lot of people putting out ideas for things that already exist (without significant change or improvement), or which aren't practical, or which combine two functions that very few people would have any interest in combining. Just because you CAN combine two things doesn't mean you should! :-) It would kind of be nice to have a list where all of the "ain't gonna happen" items have already been taken out, lol. Hate to have a gatekeeper, but if you don't then it gets a lot harder to find the diamonds out there when you have thousands of submissions.

Maybe all of the ideas could be posted, while you still have paid readers combing through (who have experience in that catagory of ideas) to flag what stands out to them as "some of the best." Granted, some people would probably then only look at THAT list for voting, but it's better than having some of the better ideas remain buried. I don't know...this site is a great idea but it does sound like it will turn into a very different type of animal the more it grows, may be no way to avoid that.

I am really dying to come up with a solution for this, because as another newbie on the site this problem stands way out to me. I just did my first submission, worked really hard on it and it's buried between a bedbug farm and a Voldemort night-light. I just made that up. Hey, no stealing!

Today this is what I am thinking. The voting categories are:
Uniqueness, Usefulness, Wow Factor, Likeliness to Purchase

In my opinion, the only meaningful opinion in the list is Likeliness to Purchase, because people are so different and the number of people voting cannot make a statistically significant sample.

But to get back on track to my point, the list could be restated as:
    Marketing, Marketing, Design, Viability

Get it? Maybe the rating that we should be doing is our own DVM analysis. I mean, that's where it's going anyway, isn't it? Just one to five stars (maybe zero to five) on each, with a little balloon help on what those terms mean.

But here is the real significance:
The ongoing voting results could become the relative ranking or view for the community. Rating something 'Likely to Purchase' is your vote, and the first thing you will see in that view is those ideas rated Likely to Purchase and ranking high in D, M, V, or some combination.

Isn't that unfair to the crummy ideas? Yes, that's the point. Since the whole purpose of the system is to 'bubble up' the best submissions, that is now unlikely because ninety percent of submission will never be scrolled down to and read, because the voter burns out on the first pages of chaff.
    • Good ideas, but again when you ask questions like "likely to purchase" you need to make sure you are asking the right portion of the audience. For example, people with kids or who buy gifts for people with kids for children's items, people who actually garden for garden items, people who have an ipad for related accessories etc....otherwise the answer to that question might not say much about the true target market. Yeah, there are things we ALL use like the cool power plug, but many ideas are for very specific groups of consumers.
    • If all ideas are exposed to large numbers of people using a practical system (not the present one) you are already asking the right portion of the audience. Not only that but they are self-selected because the others will ignore that category.

Another solution to the "ignored/buried invention" syndrome:

Quirky starts to use its "random sort" function to distribute the submissions among the voters.
(In other words, Quirky assigns us submissions to look at.)

If the "Random Sort" is truly random, then every submission will end up being evaluated by a large group of voters.

I like assigned batches better than random batches. Maybe if Quirky gets too many submissions they should be broken up into smaller displays throughout the week. Tough problem.
