Feedback on submitted ideas by the professionals at Quirky
It would really help to know why an idea is not chosen by Quirky. Its discouraging when I think I have a great idea. I submit it and get praise and the idea is not chosen. When an idea expires the Quirky staff could say something as little as too complicated, not enough demand, or make suggestions. I think the overall success rate and submission rate would increase. I submitted 4 ideas this month and 2 have expired. I have no clue why. I do know that I will not be submitting another idea or participating unless an idea I submitted is chosen or I get feedback from the professionals at Quirky.

Hey Ryan. I understand that this can be super frustrating. But keep in mind, we receive upwards of 1,000 idea submissions per week so it's not a feasible or sustainable practice to provide feedback for every single idea submission. That is why we have our community of over 120,000 members; to provide feedback and validation from a consumer's perspective (which is very valuable). Another thing to note is, we employ a team of approximately 60 employees working extremely hard to design, manufacture, distribute, market, and sell the products that our inventors create. So as much as we would love to be able to provide a sliver of feedback for every single submission, it's not humanly possible at this time. However, as we grow and expand, we hope to build out our team in a way where we have the resources and time to provide more detailed feedback from our perspective and not just from the perspective of our community.

DesignJunkie December 28, 2011 22:49Would it be possible to have some standard problem categories, as I imagine most failures fall into them, for example: too expensive to produce, not unique in marketplace, too specialized, etc. That way when an employee doesn't select a product they could just click an explanation button. I know that it won't provide a ton of info, but at least it would point someone in the right direction. You'd have to have a disclaimer telling people to go to the forum to talk with others about improvements rather than contacting staff.EditDeleteRemove

Here's my big question: How do I figure out what your design team at Quirky felt about my idea submission? I was led to believe I'd receive a professional critique of my product, but instead got a computer generated email. How do you pick winners? I know it has little to do with votes and more to do with how viable a product it is, according to your team, but . . . I'm just at a loss here.

I'm saddened.-
Hi Ryan! I apologize if you felt that it was misleading. We try to make it clear that we rely on our community and collaborative process to provide feedback on idea submissions. You're receiving instant consumer feedback which we feel is extremely valuable.
Cody's answer before the merge was correct: Detailed feedback is only given if your idea is put Under Consideration and was not chosen. Products that run the full 30-days and do not get picked in that span do not receive any detailed feedback and, if you opted to, are held in the Quirky vault for when/if retailers come to Quirky looking for a specific type of product they can search past submissions before starting a designated phase for the search. -

Your business model needs to change as your user base grows. until it does, your whole company is broken.

Quirky gets hundreds, if not thousands of submissions weekly, there is no possible economical way for the company to provide detailed feedback on every single idea submitted. The company is not broken, if it were it wouldn't of had the success it has had in the short 2.5 years it has been around.

OK I was talking more about the way influence is distributed; it's clearly F-d up. So if I invent something, tell all my friends to vote for me, then I WIN: all my friends who stopped by Quirky to drop me 1 vote will now be payed FOREVER. On the other hand, a guy spends hours and hours reading, leaving long, detailed comments that will actually help the inventors, and he only uses his precious votes on the few things he deems worthy . . . but if none of the MANY products he tried to help out end up winning, well, he's out of luck. So to be successful at influencing things, you just need to find out where the bandwagon is and HOP ON IT. Wow, great method for getting people to offer their priceless advice. What's my solution? Only give influence to people who leave comments that actually INFLUENCE the product! Wow, what an idea! That way it's easy to seed out who is actually helping and who is just clicking the "vote" button. The comments I leave are usually 2-3 paragraphs long, where I'll go into detail about every aspect of their idea. My comments are usually longer and more in depth than most of the other comments I see, yet because I haven't yet picked a winner, I have no influence. Maybe I should just hop on the bandwagon and start clicking VOTE more. Maybe . . .

Final Score. How do you get one. When do you get one? Do you wait 30days from submission? Will you know if your idea fell short in certain areas? do you get much of a break down?

Final score??.-
Hey Jason. The Final Score section on the Ideas Submitted page is a holdover from our old platform. I'm going to reach out to our UI team to find out why it's still there as it confuses a number of people. As mentioned above by Andy, we rely on our community to help provide feedback for ideas unless it's marked Under Consideration by Quirky staff. If you have questions about your idea in particular you can reach out to us at questions@quirky.com.

I think a lot of frustration stems from the fact that most submitters feel that their idea was never looked at at all. A simple response of "Product was reviewed by Q" would suffice. It might even end the pimping and spamming or at least minimize it.
