Hello guys. Congrats on the new web design, just thought I shoot a few suggestions:
1.- There is no way of returning to the first or last page when navigating through the list of product ideas. It's kind of a standard to see these buttons on page navigations now.
2.- Try to go for the "youtube" effect for your product ideas voting page. When inside a product detail, there is only a link to "NEXT IDEA" and "PREVIOUS IDEA" product.. but I feel there should be either a list of thumbnails of other products http://msnbcmedia4.msn.com/j/msnbc/Co..., or at least a thumbnail that shows the next/previous product. This will really help users keep on clickin'
My only concern with this section on the quirky site has always been that, like any other paged search, people get bored of clicking "next page" after a while, which takes away the chances of getting votes for the products at the end of the list.
At some point I sent an email recommending a grid-like format to display as many products in the lowest pages possible. Title, Thumbnail and a few other tags, all other info is displayed with a mouse over (consider the tipsy JS library) or after the click. Something like this -> http://i.imgur.com/ZFMDd.png, except you would need to resize the thumbnails, fonts and tags of each square so that you can fit twice as many products per page... or maybe just make a long vertical page for your "Product Evaluation" page. Better to scroll that to have to click and wait for reload, even if it's an ajax reload, since in one glance I can see all the products and really decide which ones I want to give my vote to.
Everything else looks really good.
Best of luck.

Great thoughts, Jon, thank you! The First & Last page button is a possibility. We're also playing around with enabling users to jump to specific pages, and we'll see which option would work out best.
The YouTube navigation model sounds fantastic. I've added that to the list of ideas for discussion. We might also use this idea as a starting point for making navigation more visual overall, to keep people interested in eval. If we decide to implement, it would take some time, but I'm loving the direction this could take! -

Here's another thought about navigating the site. Could we incorporate "latest comments" on the project phases? So instead of clicking into all the variations of a design phase or names and viewing the comments in each individual idea--we can see the last 5-7 comments made off to the side.
Thanks for listening. -

Would be cool to have a one page list with all the submissions. 2-4 word titles only and category. A title and category interests you? Just click. Visited ideas would then get a checkmark beside. Voted/rated products gets thumbs up or star.
Easy to surf, see and compare your favorites list after.
Cheers -

Cool thoughts!
Judi, are you envisioning one dedicated section of Latest Comments that pulls from comments on all ideas in a given project?
Jason, we are collecting category info during the submission process and working out the best way to use that info on the eval side, so it sounds like we're on the same page with that suggestion. There's already a 140-character limit on the idea titles, and we wouldn't want to shut down people's ability to describe their ideas, so it's not likely that we'd change the title to only 2-4 words.
In addition to navigation tools, we're also working out what filtering tools would help everyone go through rounds more easily. Things like a Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down button are being discussed. We want to make sure that everything works together in a way that makes sense. Keep posting ideas and stay tuned. -

Along with the other things mentioned, I'd also like my "filter", "sort", and "show all" choices for the submission index to stay in effect when I open a submission, then go back to the index. And I'd like to go back to the last place I was in the index.
Because, the way these things work now actually discourages me from opening and reading submissions.
Maybe a "back to the Index" button on the submission pages would be helpful too.
Because, currently, the only way back to the index after opening a submission is to click "Product Evaluation", and that seems to reload everything. -

I’m
thinking Shirley understands me, but I'm also jealous she gets a food truck to pull up in front of her work.
@Shirley--I was thinking within each project. For example, if you are clicked into a project page--like for idea refinement (like the bobble toy or strainer) or naming--you could see a running list of all comments just within those ideas instead of clicking into each separate idea to read them. Does that make more sense? -

Hi Shirley,
Sorry, I wasn't very clear. I'm envisioning more of a separate, condensed
"SHOW ALL" page. A title and category page only.
Something like a top 100 music list. Only the titles and category would show up. Click on the title and you get the detailed description and pitch etc... Visited ideas would dim, unvisited remain highlighted.
ONE PAGE IDEA
1. Shourglass Bathroom Voted/ Rated
2. Better Binder Office supply Unvisited
3. Hoverware Kitchen Rated
4. Modular Chair Outdoor furniture Voted/ unrated
5. TV/Speaker Mount Electronics Unvisited
6- etc...
125. Modular Cutting board Kitchen Unvisited
126. Can Crush Recycler Kitchen Voted/unrated
1. This would help us scan categories and products of personal interest faster
2. See which products we've already voted, visited and rated.
3. Have a better reference point to help compare product ideas
Submissions page would have to add a 2-5 word "Title" category above the Description category for this to work efficiently.
Idea Submitters would have to be warned of this change since many voters would choose to navigate exclusively through this list rather than the 10 at a time method.
So concise 2-5 word Title would be important to learn.
Would be cool if this one page list could work and change with existing filters too. (the most comments all one page, most popular etc...)

I am totally for this. Asked for it at the summit in the group, and direct in private to Lacy, and mentioned it around here somewhere. It is very important to #1 not making people feel their ideas are so buried, #2 making it easier for evaluators to see more ideas, #3 reducing the barrier between the top 10 in their respective sorts and the rest among other things.

Thanks for the extra details, you lovely Quirks, you!
Clinton, we want that too. The request to preserve filtering & sorting options when returning to main page and when clicking the Next button is in the works.
Judi & Jason, I'm summarizing your suggestions to add to our ongoing discussion at HQ. Both ideas sound visually engaging, which would keep people participating, which we love. However, both would involve redesigning the main eval page and a lot of work on the tech side. We'll do it if it's the best solution, but wanted to give you some insight into the things that factor into our decisions.
No matter what, we're going to continue making it fun & easy to participate in the Quirky process, so stay tuned! -

"Next Idea" and "Previous Idea" should be linked to your current filter and sort. For example, if you filter by "My Unrated" and "Most Popular" it brings you to the next most popular idea that you haven't yet rated, instead of just the next newest idea.

Hey Justin, agreed! We're working to make navigation more intuitive.

Would anyone besides me appreciate a "considering" button or similar in submissions.
In practice, I'd like to be able to look through all the submissions and somehow note ones I think are good ideas. Then later, come back and review just those submissions and vote on what I think are great ideas.
Right now, I "vote" for anything I find interesting, and then sort by ones I voted for, and UN-vote for ones I no longer believe in. I don't like to have submitters seeing votes and then watching votes actually decrease later -- but can;t come up with a better method.

More efficient voting idea?.-
This is definitely something that people have asked for. We're figuring out ways of improving eval so that it's easier for everyone to go through. Changes will be coming.
