This seems to be a hot topic in the forums right now.
.
From my own personal experience (Banana Clip) I had a top 5 finisher and was very disappointed that all I got from Quirky for that effort -- was a two sentence response.
I put a lot of hard work into the renderings/images, descriptions, and commenting back to anyone that would leave me a comment on my idea. As a result, the community voted and made me a top 5 finisher.
.
Why can't Quirky put a small amount of effort back into the community, and write a few more paragraphs about the positives and negatives that were discussed within the Quirky company on a specific idea (in addition to any non-generic statements). All I'm asking for is 10 more minutes of work per top 5 + wildcard finisher.
.
I'm not asking for novels. I'm not asking Ben to call me personally and explain anything. Just a little more information to help me decide whether or not to pursue my idea through another path or through Quirky again.
.
Certainly this would help pay back the community for its efforts in submitting ideas, while also helping all of the community, understand the type of issues that make a successful product for Quirky.
.
cheers.

Hey guys, I've beefed up eval recap 151/152 in the following ways:
1. Added specific patent info where I could share that info.
2. Written up more specific feedback for the 3 submissions which shared many similar features (to provide better guidance to the individuals).
3. Added an introductory paragraph explaining the purpose of eval recaps.
I will not be adding:
1. Instructions for how to change a non-winning submission.
2. Demographic data (each ideator can access data about his/her own idea).
The idea to stream eval live and include ideators in the meeting is under consideration. Go show your support if you likey. We'll see what we can make happen!
Let me know what you think. Going forward, we'll keep to this standard of info in recaps and evolve it based on feedback.
-
Hmm, what kind of info would be helpful to add? I'm interested to find out what a lot of people think, so feel free to pimp this thread in the forum. Short lists might be most productive here, so I can sift through and see points of commonality.
-
-
also... let us hear things like...
what happened in the staff meeting, as a big discussion came up on this idea over (insert some of the conversation.)-
Ah, you want more flava, huh? We'd actually love to but worry it would water down the info provided. Would love to hear people's thoughts on that as well. If we can have a little fun and still be taken seriously, I'm all for it.
-
-
I guess you could word it as 'flava'. but I don't want it so much so, that so many spices have been added to the soup, that it tastes bad.
I just feel that for the effort that the top five people have put in, that they deserve a little more feedback.... And sure it can have flavor.
.
by adding more comments, it will show the quirky cares about the product being submitted and is taking them seriously. -

Great comments. It would be nice to get some sort of feedback on our ideas. It took Edison a few hundred tries to get the light bulb right, imagine if he submitted it in a brief to Quirky and never got feedback, we would be exactly where we all are now..in the dark!! LOL! I agree a little love from Quirky would be nice.

Yes but if Edison had a company like Quirky who was toting the whole Social Product Development thing, then yes he might have made fewer mistakes by getting some feedback, and we all could have had our lights much quicker. Well not me lol but my great great grands could have had lights quicker.

Ssshhh Shirley never let an inventor know they can make it without you!! LOL!!

the most helpful information would be just to hear anything that the staff commented on in the evaluation meeting. I think it would help this community a lot, and bring down some of this anger/tension, just to hear ordinary comments that happened in the evaluation meetings.
I know if I got more than two sentences, that it would help me feel that Quirky truly gave my idea a chance, and I'm sure something in there would help either give me focus to pursue, or to bury the idea.
The only comment on my banana clip was that it was a simple idea, an impulse buy, and that it probably couldn't be patented. It would've been great to hear maybe what materials it could've been made out of. whether or not it was cost-effective. Why an impulse buy is bad. The prices of bananas in China.
.
By hearing anything more from Quirky specifically on any of the top 5 finishers, it would be fabulous to get that feedback for those ideas.
.
It's just nice to have Quirky engage us as a community a little more. -
-
Well if it was all live on Ustream with the inventors, I think we would all be happy. :)
-
-
It would be great if feedback would include a note what could be improved so that the ideator can resubmit later or saying that Quirky does't expect this kind of idea in the future. Because you can loose because of 1) the winning idea was way better or 2) your idea is not good one; IMHO these are two separate issues.
-
-
on the Forums... David Quirk stated that "This point would be moot if they would just ustream evals with the inventors."
.
that would be awesome!!
but i can understand why that might be too much information to let out to the public. --- but i guarantee that, that would be more popular than the brainstorming sessions, and probably the quarterly updates/town meetings too!
.
love to see that... but not holding my breath.-
but I thought Quirky was transparent??

Perhaps providing accurate information would be more helpful. Not information that is way off base from the actual idea.
-
-
Well someone would have to be there to confront said inaccuracies whilst wine drinking staff text. :)

http://www.businessweek.com/the_threa... states a consolation prize of marketing info. Who ever gets it?
Need: Simple demographics, ratings scores, votes etc. -
-
when a staff score of zero is given.... something must have been said as to why the product should die. that information could be useful to the inventor.
-
-
So far, I'm hearing:
1. Add more details from conversation
2. Provide more accurate information
3. Demographic data, ratings & votes
4. Live stream the whole eval meeting
Is that a good synopsis? Let me know what else. I'm listening and figuring out what's possible.-
yes. all of that would be great Shirley.
i rank the order of importance (IMO) to be (ideally):
4.
1.
2.

You need to phrase your comments with
“we would or would not like to see this again – because...” and
“the following changes or evidence would need to be provided for us to re-consider this idea.” -
-
Abstractly ironic part being that top 5 in community votes tend to have very large number of community comments already. So they have been fed quite a bit of feedback. However in comments people tend to ask for clarification vs. a tossed off "already exists."
Barring a give and take, then the same expectation should be applied to staff evaluation. If you have a patent concern, provide a link. If it's off brand, then Publish a Guide to the Quirky Brand Philosophy. Also, solid feedback on the community picks helps inform the community on Quirky's intent. -
-
Oh and like momma always said, "Start by saying something positive, then trash it, and then end with a positive." :)
-
-
CHAMP
2How about adding a conference call with the ideator to run down your belief on what the idea is, so clarification can be given if you misunderstood it. This way you don't misrepresent it in eval.
It would be great if they could be part of the eval, but at least add it as a 10 minutes or less call before eval as part of your DMV research.
With the inaccurate recap of the ideas it is clear that there is a huge disconnect with this part ofthe process.- view 3 more comments

that makes you sound paranoid Michael. ;-)
i'm sure your original submission is clear, or it wouldn't have made it that far.
i don't believe in conspiracy theory's, except the true ones! -

It isn't a conspiracy theory. See my other comments below.

@MT
or what if the Top 5 + Wildcards were invited to just listen in on the eval meeting -- or sent an audio recording. -
-
We need interaction imo. Like QS could say their findings/results for the ideas and then let the inventors have a rebuttal and challenge any inaccuracies. It may or may not change anything but everything is clear to everyone and then Q can move on and pick that dollar store item no one wants, unimpeded. :)
-
Hey David,
i see no reason for ideators have a rebuttal and challenge any inaccuracies.
.
if an idea has gotten that far... it must be pretty clear to the community, what the idea is, and what the community wants to do with the idea.
.
but i do think Quirky should share and communicate what the top 5 + wildcards pro's and con's are to them as a company. and clearly communicate what it was that they liked and didn't like about it to the community and to the ideator. -
-
-
-
-
It would still be one way communication if there is no interaction between Q and the ideator. What good would it do me if they screwed up the idea presenting it in eval after the fact. The damage is still done.

you can't have it both ways Michael.
if you don't want POTENTIAL and POSSIBLE ideas in your submission.... then don't put the words POTENTIAL and POSSIBLE in your idea submission.
.
it really sounds like you need to have somebody proofread your submissions before you submit them, if you don't know what you're saying. ;-) -
-
Ha, I knew exactly what I was saying. There is the main design and I was pointing out that there was potential to add the other way to in order to show the design flexibility not that it was actually the design.

David, this should be a separate idea thread or a comment in the thread that I asked Michael to start (see above). Thanks!

I had an idea in the top 5 in the Clear Silicone round. That was one of the weeks that the staff stopped doing the video because they were spending too much time pimping the so-called "socially developed products" to the world. This was the "in between" time before someone on the staff said "Hey, maybe we could take 5 minutes and post a recap on the blog". Mind you, before the first evaluation video there was no feedback either, but when something is given and then taken away it seems like a slight.
I don't know anything about how my idea did, other than the fact it didn't win. I received absoluetly ZERO feedback from Quirky.
Whatever happend to the "analysis" mentioned in the video a couple of years ago that we were supposed to get?
After that experience, I realized that the individual does not matter to Quirky, its the collective that matters. The ability to be able to say "we have 70,000 registered users" is marketing fluff that props Quirky up.
The bottom line is that the Quirky staff makes all the decisions, and may or may not decide to let us in on the "why". We are just cogs in the wheel pimping "socially-developed" to the Bloat-Mart mentality.
-
Zymie, this is a really good point. We want to be more consistent. I'm overseeing a project to provide feedback to submitters of ideas in rounds where we missed doing recaps. This will only be for rounds that came after we started doing recaps, we won't be going back to the beginning.
This will take a little bit of time, but expect to hear from us. Thank you for pointing this out. -

Michael, if there's a hose attachment that could be used on indoor faucets, then we go right back to the engineering challenge of making that attachment universal for faucets. You can't have it both ways.
As for existing products, I'll admit I do not know what's involved in the design and engineering of a product like that. But I do trust the team we have assembled, and if they say that it would add to the complexity and cost of a product, that's the info I report in the recaps.
Thank you for linking to an existing product. We do not argue that this product is impossible to make, just that it was not the best opportunity for Quirky. I hope that I've demonstrated a clear understanding of the idea you submitted. I do have to leave now, and will not be debating our decision any further. I hope you can respect that as well. -
-
I was simply stating that you could potentially add it.
I understand that you choose what you want and I am fine with that. It is disappointing, but understood (no debate). What I was not fine with was the lack of accurate information being relayed back in the recap. I encountered it once before and hoped it wouldn't happen again, but it did. Since we can't view the eval that is all we have to go on.
I hope you can understand the frustration from waiting 5 days for any clarity on what appeared to be a poor copy and paste on the recap. I am looking forward to seeing more descriptive and accurate recaps in the future. -

Superb, Shirley, is it possible that you do the same for Eval 150 a week before?
-
Yikes, I'm sorry Imants. It's just not feasible for me to go back and layer more info into all the previous recaps. I will answer your supplier question in your GS thread right now though!

Ok, thanks, I know you are overloaded.

Shirley,
I'm very happy to hear that you are beefing up the eval recaps. that is a fabulous thing for both the community and Quirky.
thank you very much!

I am +1 for the showing of a live streaming of eval. that would be fabulous! -

Yes I expect madness and mayhem and heavy rotation on CNN once we get in a bitchfight over watersource.

Great to see the extra feedback Shirley! Isn't there still a way that the idea submitter can get the final average of the star ratings for each of the 4 areas? People take the time to rate and I think it would greatly help the submitter.
I also had NO IDEA that I could go to my idea submitted and click on the product number in blue and find ANALYTICS. This is way too hidden. Instead of the product number in blue it should say Analytics!!!!
Also: I can't even read "Capacities of your critics" and what is underneath (I only see half of the blue words since analytics covers it). When I click on a blue word, nothing happens. -
