Sifting through names and tagline suggestions is overwhelming/tedious!

I, and many others, have found the name and tagline sections of the quirky process extremely cumbersome. Sifting through upwards of 250 names or taglines becomes extremely tedious.

While quirky does possess a system by which we can navigate the ideas in a somewhat more simple manner (faves, newest, etc.) None of the methods is super-helpful or even all that efficient.

What if users were allowed to group answers into ones they like and don't like - and then proceed to do the voting etc. from there. Or, instead of having just 3 votes, give people an unlimited amount of "up" votes (only one per suggestion) to get a general idea of the best names - and then have a subsequent 24 hour period where the "final list" of names is voted on with the 3 (or less) votes.

Or, what if we applied some sort of "digg" model to it where questions could be voted up and down, etc. With the best making it to a final list where we voted?

These are all kind of rough thoughts without any explanation on the implications of each one, but I hope this serves as a starting point to a discussion on the naming and tagline classification and selection process.

    • It would be nice to have an announcement prior to influence reward naming the the winner of each submission for name and tagline. Possibly even listing the top 2 or 3. Kinda like to know how I placed when I submit an idea for names and taglines. Its no fun submitting something then not hearing back until the product has been named. You have no way of knowing how you placed. I am sure you will have a winner with several votes and a few hundred each voting for themselves, lol! So maybe only show the top vote getter or second and third place as well.

    Agreed. It's tedious, something to do a quick yes/no and then choose from a top 20.... or even a "like" button next to the vote button (it takes more time to click into a submission and--even though I like the sliders--clicking a button is quicker).

    I like Ethan's idea. A simple alternative could be to add an alphabetic sort choice. The new sort would help me look for existing entries that might conflict with what I have in mind.

    Yes! Even something like what we had at namethis, with the new names coming up screened yellow, would help somewhat. But what I'd really love is:

    #1: One continuous page. Having to click "next" 8 or 9 times and waiting for each page to download is a real time suck.

    #2: A sorting tool, with which we could move names "under consideration" off to the side and then compare/contrast them before voting. As it is now, I have to vote to just keep track of a name I like. Then, if a name comes up that I like better, I have to go to "favorites" to uncheck a box, then go back to the "recents" and find the new one I liked. Very cumbersome and time-consuming.

    #3: A realistic rating system. I just can't rate 250 names. It makes more sense to rate only names we LIKE instead of wasting time dragging the sliders from 0 to 1 for names we don't. I'm sure I'm not the only one to forgo rating altogether, which is too bad for the submitter interested in data.

    I'm also intrigued by the idea (oft-floated at kluster) of the Three-Step Solution: 1) simple up/downs, followed by 2) Ben & Co. picking the top 25, followed by 3) voting. (You could distribute influence partly based on up/down rating, partly based on final voting.)

    The best thing about these options is that users could actually process more submissions. This will be important as Quirky's user base grows. And, to be frank, I find the 3- or 5-submission limit creatively limiting as well; Very often I'm second-guessing myself and "playing it safe." While I understand no one wants to read through 1,000 stupid names, a sorting tool would actually make it faster to evaluate 1,000 names than it is now to evaluate a fraction of that.

    Great feedback, especially from Stacy. We are looking into ways to make our voting system more efficient -- we don't want our most creative minds getting turned off because they feel like they're wasting their time!

    Here's how I keep track of lots of name ideas: When I see an idea I like, I make a comment. When I want to look at just the ideas I liked again, I select to see "my commented" from the drop down box. Then I can see ALL the ideas I liked and I can change my votes if I want.
    • It's great that you figured out a way to make the current system work for you, .. but it would be SO much easier if Quirky simply put a checkbox by each submission so we could simply check each one we like; .. and then we could just choose the option, "List only checked submissions", .. uncheck those we want to eliminate, .. and repeat until we've narrowed it down to a manageable few.

    I do something similar. I skim the ideas. If I think they've got merit, I will rate them. Then I select the options to look at the ones I've rated and choose to vote amongst those.

    Hey--David Carlson brought up some good points (and I've noticed other similar comments in the forum). Some further thoughts on the naming phase. Hot topic this week... I'll try to quickly cut/paste the gist of the post:

    Just a few thoughts that might make the Product naming step and voting better:
    1. Quirky staff should be monitoring the posts, and throwing out duplicates (or extremely similar ideas). First to post, first to get credit I say.
    2. Instead of just listing all (sometimes 100s) of ideas, which, as people have said, probably most people don't look at more than a few pages of... what about instead, a page where you can quickly vote between just TWO of the ideas. Basically, two of them come up at random to you, and you vote which you like better. You can do that as many times as you want. Ideas you didn't vote for won't appear again for vote to you... one's you did vote for could potentially come back in another "head to head". It is a bit more direct, fun, and if done via AJAX, you could whip through dozens of "votes" very quickly, and probably get down to a top 3 like now anyway, but, at least the person actually looked at most of the ideas.

    I agree, choosing your favorite between 2 is way easier than looking at hundreds of entries, I tend to avoid naming altogether because it becomes tedious. Your "choose between 2" is like Bracketeers (see bracketeers.com)--choose your favorite from 2 (or 3 or 5) and the more one idea is chosen it moves up the bracket. It would be way easier to choose among a "sweet 16"--instead of hundreds. I think the community would feel like they had a fair shot at influence with a narrowing down of ideas. And you could still keep it "loose"--meaning Quirky could simply throw in their favorites if they feel like a pretty cool name was overlooked...you could also keep all of the entries visible as well (maybe alphabetized/searchable).

    Also, I think (and I know this has been mentioned in various posts by other members) allow a certain amount of time for submitting (first 48 hours or whatever) and then a set amount of time just for voting and reviewing the submissions (the last 24 or 36 hours or whatever).

    • A good way to sort through this would be similar to the name submission, when you send in a name that is too similar to someone else's it says sorry you can't submit that. Well since idea submissions are a bit more complex, then a staffer should skim through any ideas that look similar and based on the time stamp of when it was submitted, make a determination as to which idea they will accept for that round. That doesn't mean that the idea creator gets stiffed, it just means that they will have to resubmit it another time. Of course monetary credit should be given to them for any paid submissions. Now one could argue that my idea has different elements than the other guy's but it should be up to a staffer to decide if there are enough differences to allow both ideas to compete against each other. Hey that's how it is in the real world. First one to the patent office wins!! Ask Alexander Graham Bell oops he's dead, well anyway he only beat the other guy by a couple of hours..

    I came to post a similar suggestion to find it already here. A bit disappointed that it's 3 months old though.

    Especially in the tagline and naming stages, it really is hard to manage all the entries and review and rate them without a better organization system.

    I agree with most of the above. Even if we could sort the submitter's names and/or the submitted ideas alphabetically, that would be a good start (would prevent some duplicates). The separate voting period would also help considerably.
    Being able to mark or rank our favorites would also be nice to provide a little weighting...

  • We definitely realize that the current system doesn't make it easy to sort through the huge numbers of submissions we receive on a regular basis. We're working on a fix, which will hopefully come soon!

    • Jessica, in regards to the voting on Tag-Lines and Names: how about adding a + and - to the submission cell/table. As we scroll down and see submissions we don't like, we can hit the "-" to minimize that submission cell. Then we can repeat the process and by that process of elimination we will ultimately weed them out until we are left with the remaining submission we want to vote on. Then at the top of the page we can put an "expand all" tab to expand them to have visual access to all submissions again.

      This would perhaps be the easiest remedy to code in your HTML/PHP script?

    I just attempted to go through about 100names and its very tedious my biggest problem is that the dropdown is to far away from the slide scale which is not very efficient motion with my laptop touchpad.

    If you want everyone to rate every name that comes through how about making a button like start rating box that would pop a name, under it pop question on make the input with the keypad as soon as the number is selected flip to the second question 2 when the number is selected pop next name repeat. I could bang out thousands of ratings this way if the flip box was fast enough 1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,3,4, etc..

    The way I'd do it is just show every user 10/20 on a page when they log in. Like a what's going on now box. Users can then just operate on a select subset, prompted to them on login or every morning or some interval. From there you should give uses the ability to get a See All list, of all the names/taglines listed on one single page in alphabetical order. Users can then just operate in the subset if they like or for users with more time on there hands then can get access to the entire list.

    There also needs to be a quick view from inside the my profile page where you can get direct access to your submissions only. It sucks having to scroll through 50 pages of names just to see if anyone commented on yours.

    You could also trim the # of submissions for names and tag lines to one until you have a better system in place to stop the clutter.

  • There are so many great ideas out there! As our programmers/designers continue to work on this section of the site, I'll be compiling your great ideas into a list. Keep 'em coming! But please, be patient as well. We have a long pipeline of site improvements... some visible to the public (like process changes and bug fixes) and others that aren't (like systems that will enable us to track and batch orders quicker to our warehouse).     There should be an explanation and word limit on the tagline submissions. Quirky should put a notice at the top of examples of tagline formats that are generally accepted (i.e. not more than 6-8 words, utilization of rhyming, alliteration, etc.) so that we don't get inundated with so many terrible submissions. I really like David's idea of choosing between two submissions and using that as a filtering mechanism for choosing the best submissions.

    I know for me it would help to know which idea is getting what percentage of the community votes because we are all here to help each other succeed and if I see three or four ideas that are getting the most votes I would either choose one or if I thought I had a better idea I would submit one. Make sense?

    If the submitted ideas could have some sort of window/box on each idea with a percentage and when it was posted I know that would help me out tremendously.

    In addition to what has been said here, I'd like to suggest a simpler alternative to the "show all" for the list of idea submissions. I like using Show All because it's tedious to go page after page. After a few I'm tired & don't want to continue. I'm guessing others feel the same, and there may be some great ideas on the last pages that don't even get looked at unless someone pages through or resorts the list.

    Problem is, doing Show All is just as tedious because each entry is as "heavy" - code wise - as when only 10 per page are shown. Plus you have to keep scrolling down to get additional ones to show up.

    What I'd propose is a light weight text-only list when "Show All" is selected. Just like a big laundry list, with the title of each idea only, and this would be a clickable link to the actual idea. There could also be a small icon showing which ones have an attachment. This should load very fast, and as a bonus use up less bandwidth!

    I spoke to Andy Garcia about this idea and he seemed to think it was worth considering.

    Hey Josh,
    The Product Naming phase for each product usually takes place over about three days, so you can submit and vote if one is open. (To see if one is open, click on "Influence" at the top of a Quirky.com page, then scroll down to the "Products Currently in Development" section.)
    If one is open, and you're on the Product Naming page (the one where you can see and vote for names), you should see a light blue box with a dark blue "Submit Your Idea" button in it.
    You should be able to click it and submit a name three times, if you're signed in.

    As votes are tallied, rank the best(most voted on) by placing them at the top position. So every time the page is loaded, the list is sorted from best to worst.

    Dennis, that would work great IF Quirky didn't reward people for agreeing with other people (and the current influence % system does that).

    When we can see the top ideas, it's like we're being told, "Vote for this idea and have a great chance at reward"
    ...who's not going to vote for it?
    We all are. But when we do, Quirky learns nothing about whar we like

    Quirky has the proposed system to handle an unlimited number of submissions elegantly - with no stress to us and much better voting results for Quirky.

    IMO it would be better for Quirky just to implement that system rather than add layers of adjustments onto the current system.

    I decided to try submitting an idea this week for the first time and I wonder if anyone will even see it. If it wasn't for the fact that there is a picture of a clock, I would have a hard time finding it myself. It ended up about halfway into 750 submissions. Couldn't the Quirky staff save us a lot of time and choose the top 100 to be evaluated? If my clock gets dumped, I only lost $10 but at least the good ideas will get a good look at and when I am reviewing new ideas, I won't accidentally miss the good ones. I also like the idea of raising the price to $50. That will help bring out the serious inventors.
    • I am having the same experience. But raising the price is a brute force approach with no intrinsic benefit that will promptly cause the majority of the community to fly away. We want to be at our party, not someone else's. You are right that only serious inventors will be left; a very small number who generally don't sign away their intellectual property rights. Quirky's strength is the crowd of casual inventors and it was a wise move on their part to drop the price.

      I would rather tweak my approach above to triage the submissions after an idea has been voted up or down say, 100 times, instead of the statistically exhaustive matching which may be too many for the system for now. The survivors can then be offered up fo another round of matching.

    Easy solution:

    Quirky distributes the submissions among the voters one at a time.
    • None are ignored - all are seen and evaluated.
    • Voters aren't "comparing" names - trying to choose one as better than another - they just like it or they don't, Digg style.

    Here's how it works:
    • When someone clicks in to look at the names or taglines, they see one name.
    • They then thumbs-up if they like it, click "next" if they don't.
    • Then, whether they click thumbs-up or "next", they instantly see another name pop up...
    ...and keep seeing names for as long as they want.
    • Since Quirky is distributing the names evenly among voters, all are seen - none are ignored.
    • Since we're seeing them one at a time, we're not "comparing"...we are just thumbs up-ing the ones we like Digg style.

    The best names bubble up for Quirky to see.
    Voters don't feel overwhelmed.
    Submitters don't feel "lost" or ignored.
    • Not bad, except that staistically half of submissions are better and half are worse, a large number these days. Even by the 80/20 rule, there will be 160 better submissions this week. It could work with an extra round of voting.

      The bottom line without changing the system too much (which I notice Quirky is not enthusiastic to do) is to boil it down to the top 5, not the top 160.

    While I think dividing the workload to be helpful, I don't believe it to be the solution.

    When all the communities efforts can be focused solely on the totp ideas that is when Quriky and the community will benefit most.

    How? Quirky idea readers. Every paid submission idea generates 10$. Because briefs are free let's say every idea has 5$ budget to pay idea readers.

    Given that most ideas take 2-5 minutes to read you could probably pay business, marketing, design students to do this and every idea would get an 5-10 unbiased reads.

    Then post the top 10-15% for the community to curate.

    Gaming will be reduced. Community and Staff can focus on the best ideas. And students get a great job that funds their education while fostering future working realtionships with Quirky

    I would suggest that 'someone' look over the submissions as they come in and if the idea does not at least meet some basic requirements such as under $150, they should be politely told thank you but it does not meet the requirements that are spelled out. This will cut down some of the numbers. then there are ideas that I have read where they won't even tell what the idea is until they are chosen. Please delete these before I waste my time. I understand wanting to include everyone but by including everyone, some very good ideas will not get looked at. That is the pity of it all.

    If the Quirky system assigns the submissions we evaluate evenly, then all will be evaluated by the same number of people...

    ...and everybody will only be evaluating as many as they want.
    ...and we won't care if some of the submissions are "junk"
    ...and we will rejoice as the number of submissions goes up.

    ...while Quirky enjoys reliable results that really do tell it which product ideas we liked the best.

    This change to the system just needs to be paired with a change to the awarding of influence*...
    ...replace the current award for "voting for a specific submission - the winner" with awarding for voter effort.

    *Because, under the current award system, people won't be happy if the system doesn't assign them the winning submission.

    I still think that all ideas should have the right to be submitted but let's say after the first 48 hours after submission the ideas should be divided into 2 separate lists, those that have received votes ( other than the inventor's vote) are placed in an "active" list and those ideas that have not received any votes ( other than the inventor's) are placed in an "in-active" list. Each of us has the ability to go through each of the lists and check out ideas in both lists. If we see one we like in the in-active list and decide to vote for it, then it switches to the active list. This may be able to cull the list down but still give the ideas an equal opportunity to be seen and possible revived.

    Good stuff but as I have been working out for a few days, I feel that it is in Quirky's larger interest to have every idea looked at in context of a comparison with other ideas, and for that purpose have the system keep track of the comparisons rather than the ideas in isolation. In essence, the system should serve up matches until all have been offered at least once to someone, and then perhaps additional rounds for the more likely ones; all transparent to the voter.

    After trying to go through all of the submissions, my computer (much less my smartphone), cable internet connection, Quirky's servers and I just can't keep up with the scrolling. I'm sure I sound like a broken record but I think the submissions for just that day/date should populate the scrolling list on the front page. Then a calendar above to select the 30 days back of active submissions with a submission count on each day (excluding current day). Arrows move the months and grayed out calendar for submissions past 30 days that you can view but not vote on. Please do something like this to make it more manageable and easy. I like visiting Quirky at different times throughout the day but this isn't my full time job. A lot of time is wasted getting back to my previous point where I left off. We know what was already submitted and the unknown is what will be submitted. So let's make it quick and easy to navigate the known. Thanks. Keep up the good work.

    I really think Quirky should list submittals in daily batches. Day #2, Day #16 Or day #27. This way an Ideator could tell folks to log into Quirk.com and check out their invention posted on Day#12 etc. The added benefit for voting quirks is that we could scroll through all of the ideas Through Day #8 and know they can pick up starting on day #9. This would avoid the scroll from the newest 200 to get to things you havent seen yet.
    This would at least simplify navigation and avoid redundancy.

    I really like the daily idea! In fact, I'd be in favor of moving away from the weekly concept completely. I think it doesn't make much sense to present the community in a sudden batch of hundreds of ideas and expect any reasonable amount of sifting & study of these ideas. It also seems arbitrary to pick 5 (plus wildcard) and just throw the rest away. Might be some really good ideas that just didn't make the top 5!

    I'd prefer a Quirky system where some of the best suggestions I've read here are put together:

    1. Ideas are collected and shown daily, in a calendar style as others have suggested, making it easy to review a small batch of ideas each day.

    2. The number of ideas submitted per day are limited. Possibly with increased entry fee to make the idea creator really stop & think whether it's a worthwhile idea. (and keep the revenue up for Quirky!)

    3. Abandon the weekly rounds. Instead, use a continuous voting approach. e.g., once an idea gets X # of votes, it goes into consideration. Otherwise it just stays up all the time so people can keep reviewing. There can be some checks to keep the total number manageable. e.g., if an idea doesn't get Y # of votes within Z # of days being posted, it gets removed.

    4. Allow comments to be posted anonymously (I posted this on another thread). No matter how much we all believe in "honest constructive criticism" - most of the comments I see are not brutally honest, as we need to be with each other in order to get the best ideas through. Most people are simply too nice and/or they fear retaliation when being brutally honest (i.e., their own ideas won't get voted for out of spite).
