sad I’m frustrated

Weeding out Names/Taglines - 2 rounds?

The number of taglines and names submitted is just so large that I have no idea what percentage of Quirky users actually manage to get through them all. I know I certainly don't. I start somewhere, find three that seem ok, or try and find something like what I was thinking of, and throw my votes in there. There's just *too many*.

And the names and taglines for some products seem like they may be reflecting this. Some seem a little...whacked, I notice, as I'm going through the various products in the Pricing Game. As in I can't really imagine that more than half a dozen people actually voted for these, out of such a large community - they seem completely random and don't represent the product at all.

With only three votes apiece, I'm getting the idea that it's just dumb luck that a name or tagline happens to be the best of the right page at the time to get a couple more views than another, or submitted near the beginning or end.

If we can't get more votes - three was fine when there were 50 names or taglines, not so fine when there's over 500 - how about a second round, where everything that got two or more (or three or more, depending on numbers - weed it down to less than 100, better yet, less than 50!) votes gets shown again. This way, we can actually pick what we like that may have a chance of winning, while actually seeming appropriate for the product.

Not merely having a product name or tagline chosen by having a couple of friends vote for your almost random seeming submission to get you some influence. Do we really want customers to hear a product name and go "WTF is *that*?" and never be able to remember the name when they send their friends to the Quirky site? And other problems could be caught, too. Vesta, Kosoku, Linkets, I'm looking at you.

  • Thanks for sharing your concern with us, Shanny. We handle the selection of taglines and names just like we do idea submissions, meaning that our design team reviews all of the submissions and chooses the best one. Often this coincides with how the community voted, but they aren't necessarily linked due to the issue with voting you mentioned earlier.

So essentially we should vote based on what we think the Quirky staff will pick, not what we like? The more I look into Quirky, the more I see that the community isn't all that involved.

  • Not so Steven. As I said, the community vote often coincides with our selection, but we make the final decision based on what we think has the best chance of attracting customers. This ensures that we make money so we can continue to offer this service, and that ideators earn money for their participation. Keep in mind that it's ideations, designs, and branding submitted by the community that we are choosing from in the first place.

I understand that Nathaniel and thank you for your reply. However, as you stated twice now, "the community vote often coincides with our selection, but we make the final decision based on what we think has the best chance of attracting customers". Your statement indeed makes sense but also shows that it would be best to vote for what the Q staff might finally choose rather than what the individual might in order to earn influence. There in lies the problem. When I signed up, I was under the impression that the community made the decisions and that's what was attractive. And, as I stated, the more I learn and participate, the farther that idea deviates from the actual truth.

sad I’m wondering when Quirky stopped giving a damn
If we had two rounds, this would take care of both problems, though. Community votes to select a pool of contenders --> Quirky pulls out those behind the scenes which don't make the cut for various reasons (so why did Linkets get through, then? There. Is. Another. Building. Toy. With. That. Name.) --> Community votes on a much smaller round of names that has been previously community approved, will not conflict with any other similar products, and will not make potential customers scratch their heads and go WTF? when they're shopping, making the community actually able to see the entire pool of names again, rather than picking a page or four at random and choosing from the best names on the pages they see.

indifferent I’m not as excited as i want to be
I agree that this process is not effective, I try to view as many as i can but usally by page 9 of 50 i get worn out. I can think of two solutions

-limiting the number of submissions down to 1 or 2, that way john doe dosent submit 20 and hopes he gets lucky with one of them. Instead he will have to think hard and only submit his best
    - have multiple rounds, first round turn it into a naming game, a random name is pulled you give a thumbs up or down then another random name is pulled and so on, the 50 names with the highest thumbs up then get to be voted for.

The naming has the same problem as idea voting, and that is volume! There are just to many. The process needs to be rethunk and adapted to handle the huge number of submissions ASAP.
