Could we see the final design before we name something? Right now everyone's assuming the spatula Quirky's designing will have interchangeable heads, but we don't know for sure. Knowing the features, material, and look of the final product would help a lot. I hesitate to vote for a name that builds on a function the product may or may not have....
The final design for Quirky products is often markedly different from the "winning" design (see "wrapping" weighing luggage tag, for instance).
Even if the crowd isn't given the whole enchilada (that way the "reveal" will still be fun), could we at least have a list of final design features?
Thanks.

Hey guys!
All naming projects now link to the final design direction. We think it's a good way of giving people a lot more guidance during the naming round, without showing everything before a product's launched for presales. Is this a good solution for y'all?

P.S. I'm basing my Q on the design questionnaire, which asked about interchangeable heads, leading me to think that decision hadn't been made. Is this to be marketed as interchangeable, nonstick, telescoping, or all three? Danke.

Hey guys,
Thank you so much for your comments! This is definitely something we debated about here at Quirky HQ -- whether to move forward with the spatula's naming phase, or wait until we perfected our designs so we could launch the industrial design phase.
In the end, we decided to launch the naming phase before the industrial design phase to give the community a project to work on over the weekend.
We're more than open to your opinions about this. Would you rather we let a project sit with no running phases, which would lengthen a product's development cycle? Or would you rather we move forward with the project by launching another phase, even if it's "out of order"?
Let us know!

As one of the biggest whiner's when quirky.com picked a specific name about a general product idea (click 'n cook), I have to now admit I've had a change of heart. I was mistaken.
I will always really, really, really want the name of a product to be functional! But my mistake? I didn't understand what the function of a product name really is. I was reacting as if the function of a product name is to describe the product.
But thinking about it, I realize that the function of a product name is to attract attention to the product (without misleading the buyer about the product's function). Describing the product is just a bonus if it happens.
So, in the case of the general spatula idea, Click 'n Cook was a fine name to choose (it rolls off the tongue and attracts attention). It doesn't matter if the final design doesn't actually click - we won't be misleading any buyers about the function. (Click is just a characteristic)
I think we are all clamoring for a "design first-name second" order of projects because we believe that will give us the information we want when branding a product. But maybe detailed product specs isn't the "information" we need.
Maybe the "information" we quirkers need in order to submit and choose better names, tag lines, and logos is education about how branding works. I think whoever on the quirky staff chose the specific name "Click 'N Cook" for a general product idea understands the dynamics of branding pretty well - maybe they could start writing a blog or something.
I guess I think that if we knew more about how branding works, we would worry less about design specs during branding projects, our submissions and votes for branding projects would be better, and the order of projects wouldn't matter so much. -

I would say, let it sit a little. It's a little frustrating designing in the dark.

I have an idea that might help the community save some time when submitting names, tag lines, industrial designs, logos, etc. Often when coming ups with names for example, there is no graphic to view to help in the process of naming. I usually go and find the graphic, print it out, look at it, and see if something pops up. I need the visual. Is it possible to keep these Winners in sequence on the next phase of development. I know you can go to the right and select the previous phase and backtrack. But we are talking about a lot of back tracking throughout the process.

In the Color/Materials/Finish phase, I would like to see more description of the product. For instance, in the Cookie Keeper what are the dimensions? Is the whole thing plastic? Are the "shelves" plastic, glass, or something else? Is there a front cover to it? If so, how does it close or latch? In the Sakura vase, what is the height? What is it made from - glass, plastic, other? I would have liked to have seen it with some sample flowers in it because from its design I cannot see how flowers would stand up well in it. I would think they would kind of flop to the two sides of the vase that are the lowest and not stand up against the peaks. Also, in the naming phase, could you have an actual picture of the product on the page where we are entering our suggested names. Thanks!

Need more info for Colors/Materials/Finish phase and a product picture for the naming phase..-
Thanks for your input. For CMF projects, we're looking for your gut reaction to which colors, materials & finish you like best. Features are usually chosen in earlier design rounds, so jump into those!
